Lake in the Hills Thorntons station considering gaming machines

A proposal to add an age-restricted video gaming café at Thorntons, 2265 Algonquin Road, Lake in the Hills, will go before the Village Board for discussion during Tuesday’s Committee of the Whole meeting.

The gas station and convenience mart intends to remodel the business to include a gaming room and gambling terminals.

Thorntons also has approached Lake in the Hills’ liquor commissioner for liquor license consideration, which would allow the sale and consumption of beer on the premises.

If approved, Thorntons’ liquor policy only would allow single-service beers to be consumed in the gaming area, require Beverage Alcohol Sellers and Servers Education and Training for all team members and limit the number of beers a person could buy to two a day.

Guests only would be able to buy beer for on-site consumption from designated single cans kept in a locked minifridge in the cash-wrap area. Each beer would cost $6.

A similar proposal involving gaming machines with beer service submitted by Speedway, W. Algonquin Road, was struck down by the Village Board in April.

Trustee Stephen Harlfinger had said that the addition of video gambling and alcohol services to the gas station sounded like bad business. A number of residents also expressed concerns about the gas station’s proximity to an elementary school.

Lake in the Hills has nine gas stations, none of which have liquor licenses that allow for on-site alcohol consumption.

A Thorntons representative is expected to be in attendance at Tuesday’s meeting to go over the gaming café plans and the regulations surrounding the service of alcohol on-site.

As of November, Lake in the Hills had 12 establishments with video gambling. During that month, video gambling generated more than $17,000 for the village, according to data from the Illinois Gaming Board.

The Committee of the Whole meeting will be at 7:30 p.m. at Village Hall, 600 Harvest Gate.

The board also will review a number of purchases, including two police squad cars, a tractor, dump truck, six public works vehicles and software upgrades.

Master contracts with Baxter and Woodman Inc. and HR Green also will be up for discussion.
